Circus was a temporary public art commission that formed part of the DOMAIN project, held in Canberra during 2000. DOMAIN was initiated by the National Institute of the Arts in conjunction with Arts ACT. The project was facilitated by Jacky Talbot (Arts ACT) and co-ordinated by Fiona Syvier.

The project involved four recent graduates from the ANU National Institute of the Arts, Megan Munro, Tim Spelman, Noni Nixon, and myself. Each artist worked with a limited budget in creating their various artworks. The project was designed to promote the ACT Governments commitment to public art through the Civic Sculpture Walk. Artworks were on display from September to October 2000.

Circus was based on the 'whack-a-mole' arcade game. Where the player attempts to hit the 'mole' or like creature with a rubber mallet. I chose this subject as a light hearted means of engaging with people's fear of the unknown. In this way it was also a meditation on my own recent experience with cancer.

Circus was fabricated using rolled, welded and galvanized steel, rubber, all weather carpet and lots of paint. Several local industries supported the supply of materials for this project, Clark Rubber, Union Steel and Hadofen P/L.
