In
July 1997 I travelled to Marble in Colorado, USA to participate in
the MARBLE/marble caving symposium.
This was intended to be a short visit en route to the Slade School of Fine Art,
London. However I remained in Colorado for several months and carved intensively,
while staying with Greg Tonozzi, a well known local carver and co-director of
the MARBLE/marble Symposium.
Prior to attending MARBLE/marble I had no experience with stone other than in
landscape construction. The human use of stone has always absorbed me and encountering
the material itself was a natural extension of this. Working with fifty or so
other carvers was an extraordinary experience.
These
works express a sense of material wonderment. Colorado
Yule marble is fine grained, often glassy stone that absorbs and refracts
light. I returned to Marble in July 2001, and can highly recommend
it
to anyone interested in an exciting carving experience.
