Since
attending a MARBLE/marble symposium in Colorado during 1997 I have
had a continuing passion for carving. Primarily I work using pneumatic
tools,refining
detail and surface by hand. Abstract vessel forms are an important
part of my visual language. These forms are often derived from a fascination
with the natural environment.
I work intuitively, responding to the essential qualities of material.
The use of steel, rubber and blown glass is an important part of my
artistic practice, often providing the opportunity to collaborate with
other artists.Utilising stone as the basis for mixed media work gives
air to the expression of a contemporary visual language, thus helping
to liberate stone from some of its historic and cultural baggage.
Since immigrating to the United states I have been employed in stone
fabrication and restoration. This has inevitably influenced my sculptural
output, bringing me into contact with new stones and the process of
construction as opposed to reduction of form. I am excited by the direction
this is taking my ideas, as it affords great opportunity to expand the
sculptural language of stone.
